Synopsis:
Cadence “Cady” Bloomquist knows two things for sure: First, shelving books at her shop, Nevermore Bookstore, totally counts as cardio. Second, staying late every Thursday night to take a certain mysterious customer’s order is not the same as waiting by the phone for some man.
Until.
Until the calls with the man who identifies himself only as “Fox” last for hours, and become the highlight of her week. Which leaves her to wonder, if his jagged velvet voice can kindle her fire over the phone, what sort of alchemy might it inspire if they met in person?
There’s nothing Roman Fawkes wants more than the brilliant, beautiful bookstore owner, but Roman Fawkes knows it can never happen. Secreted in his mountain hideaway high above sleepy little Townsend Harbor, his hermit’s existence shields him–and those around him–from the pain of his past.
Until.
Until one of their weekly calls is interrupted by a break-in, and Fawkes is powerless to protect the woman who has become his one link to the world. Orchestrating a trap for the fool who dared harm her, Fawkes finds himself not just ensnared, but beguiled by her. Now so close to Cady, he discovers she’s fallen for “Fox”, and yet he’s unable to reveal her heart’s desire is closer than she thinks.
Can Fawkes resist the temptation to get between Cady’s covers, knowing they’ll never have a happily ever after?
My Thoughts:
I decided to request this one on NetGalley solely because of the cover and the title. It looks like a fun, spooky, and possibly paranormal read. Then I read the description and it said it was a romance and I was even more excited.
This a duel POV style book - which is my favorite in a romance. So we get to see both Cady and Fox's sides of the story. Cady is definitely an outspoken, no-filter type of character and it was fun to hear her side of the dialogue. Fox's side was a bit more boring for me since he was living out in the woods and we didn't know the reasoning at first. But this quickly changed after a certain development in the story that I won't mention because of spoilers. But I loved watching these two grow closer over their phone calls.
Nevermore Bookstore turned out to be spicier than I imagined it would be as well! Probably would say it has a 3-spice rating out of 5. There were a few scenes but not too many that took away the main plot of the book. The other townspeople were just as interesting and there was a slight love triangle element with Cady and the Sheriff.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and the characters. There were some things that I felt could have been done differently/explained better but the ending even had a twist I didn't expect or see coming. This one earned a 4-star rating from me. This seems to be the first in a series so I cannot wait to check out what else these two authors have to offer! I recommend this one for fans of romance with some spice.
Big thanks to Oliver Heuber Books, Kerrigan Byrne & Cynthia St. Aubin, and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions!
